Bakuchiol
INCI - Bakuchiol.
What is it - Bakuchiol is a plant-derived active often used in cosmetic formulations as a natural alternative to retinol. It has anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone without the irritation that can sometimes occur with retinol.
pH - Formulate to below 6.5.
Safety limit - Up to 2%.
Formulas used in - Serums, lotions, creams, eye creams, oil blends, cleansers, and toners.
Formulation notes - Bakuchiol can be used in anhydrous formulations or added during the cool down phase in emulsions. It is not compatible with metal ions, such as iron or copper. Chelators may be used to avoid colouration issues.
Odour - Mild natural odour.
Form - Yellow to yellowish brown liquid oil extract.
Heat sensitivity - Up to 50°C.
Solubility - Oil soluble.
Natural / synthetic status - Naturally derived.
Contraindications - Bakuchiol is generally considered safe for most skin types, but there are a few considerations. It should be used with caution on broken or irritated skin, as it may cause some irritation in sensitive areas. While it is a gentle alternative to retinol, those with an allergy to plants in the same family (like babchi, from which bakuchiol is derived) should avoid it. Additionally, as with any active ingredient, it's important to patch test before widespread use to ensure tolerance.
