Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA)
INCI - Butylated Hydroxyanisole.
What is it - Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA) is a synthetic antioxidant used to preserve products by preventing the oxidation of oils and fats, which can cause rancidity and spoilage. It helps maintain the stability, scent, and effectiveness of the formula over time.
pH - Effective over a wide pH range 3-10.
Safety limit - 0.05-0.1%.
Formulas used in - Perfumes, lipsticks, moisturisers, eye shadows, foundations, deodorants, sunscreens, and hair products.
Formulation notes - Best suited for fragrances normally already present in fragrance prepared by fragrance house. Add during the cool down phase in emulsions.
Odour - Weakly aromatic.
Form - Colourless to faint yellow powder.
Heat sensitivity - Up to 50°C.
Solubility - Partially water soluble, soluble in alcohol, propylene glycol, fats and oils.
Natural / synthetic status - Synthetic.
Contraindications - In cosmetics, BHA can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions, especially for sensitive skin. There are concerns about its potential endocrine-disrupting effects and carcinogenicity at high doses, although it is considered safe in low concentrations (typically 0.1%). It’s best avoided in leave on products for babies or those with very sensitive skin.
