Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT)
INCI - Butylated Hydroxytoluene.
What is it - In cosmetic formulation, Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT) is a synthetic antioxidant used to prevent the oxidation of oils and fats, helping to prolong shelf life and maintain product stability. It protects both the formula and active ingredients from degrading due to exposure to air or light.
pH - Effective over pH range 4.5-7.
Safety limit - Typically used between 0.05% to 0.1% as an antioxidant. 0.001% max for mouthwash, 0.1% max for toothpaste. 0.8% max for other leave on and rinse off products.
Formulas used in - Lipsticks, moisturisers, eye shadows, foundations, sunscreens, hair care products, deodorants, and perfumes.
Formulation notes - Best suited for fragrances normally already present in fragrance prepared by fragrance house. Add during the cool down phase in emulsions.
Odour - Odourless.
Form - White to yellowish white, crystalline.
Heat sensitivity - Up to 60°C.
Solubility - Soluble in alcohol, ethanol, acetone.
Natural / synthetic status - Synthetic.
Contraindications - BHT in cosmetics can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions, especially for sensitive individuals. There are concerns about its potential as an endocrine disruptor and possible carcinogen at high doses, though it’s generally safe in low concentrations. It’s best avoided in products for infants or those with very sensitive skin.
