Menthol Crystals

INCI - Menthol.


What is it - Menthol crystals are a natural compound derived from peppermint oil and used in cosmetic formulations for their cooling and soothing properties. When applied to the skin, menthol creates a refreshing sensation, helping to relieve irritation, itching, or muscle soreness.


pH - Stable over a wide pH range 4.5-7.


Safety limit - Up to 10% start low this ingredient is potent.


Formulas used in - Balms, foot products, scalp treatments, cooling gels and cold remedies.


Formulation notes - Add the oil phase, or cool down phase in emulsions.


Odour - Cool minty, fresh odour.


Form - Clear to white crystals.


Heat sensitivity - Very heat sensitive up to 40°C.


Solubility - Soluble in alcohol and oils.


Natural / synthetic status - Naturally derived. Menthol crystals are produced by quick freezing peppermint essential oil, the menthol then crystallises out.


Contraindications - Menthol crystals can cause skin irritation in some individuals, especially when used in high concentrations. It’s important to avoid applying menthol to broken or damaged skin, as it may lead to a burning or stinging sensation. Additionally, people with sensitive skin or allergies to menthol should exercise caution. As with any active ingredient, it's advisable to perform a patch test before widespread use to ensure compatibility with the skin.
