Oat Kernel Extract
INCI - Avena Sativa Kernel Extract.
What is it - It is derived from the seeds of the oat plant and is commonly used as a soothing additive. It has moisturising, anti-inflammatory properties, and it is much more potent than oat oil. Oat kernel extract is often found in products designed for sensitive or irritated skin, including creams, lotions, and cleansers.
pH - 4-7.
Safety limit - Typically used up to 1%.
Formulas used in - Creams, lotions, eye creams, moisturisers, soaps, balms, cleansers, ointments.
Formulation notes - Heat to up to 40°C for better mobility in formulas and add during cool down phase in emulsions or during oil phase.
Odour - Subtle oat odour.
Form - Honey like.
Heat sensitivity - Up to 75°C.
Solubility - Insoluble in water. Soluble in oil and partially soluble in ethanol.
Natural / synthetic status - Natural.
Contraindications - Oat kernel extract is generally considered safe for most skin types. Always conduct a patch test when using new ingredients.
