Sal Butter
INCI - Shorea Robusta Seed Butter.
What is it - Sal butter is derived from the seeds of the Shorea robusta tree. Sal butter is a rich, emollient butter known for its moisturising and nourishing properties. It is high in fatty acids like oleic and stearic acids, making it ideal for dry and mature skin. Sal butter is commonly used in moisturisers, body butters, lip balms, and hair care products due to its ability to soften and hydrate, as well as improve skin elasticity and overall texture.
Formulas used in - lip balms, body butters, moisturisers, hair conditioners, facial creams, hand creams, eye creams, foot balms, foot creams, shaving creams, soaps, anti-aging products, sun care products.
Formulation notes - Sal butter can be used in its raw form on the skin. Sal butter can come refined or unrefined. Refined is softer, paler in colour and easier to work with. Unrefined sal butter retains more nutrients however has a stronger odour, is harder and less pliable than refined sal butter. Do not use over 10% butters in your formulas otherwise you will have stability issues. Sal butter starts to melt at 32°C if you use over 10% the viscosity of your product will drop in hot climates.
Odour - Mild nutty or earthy odour.
Form - Solid butter.
Heat sensitivity - Melting point between 32–38°C.
Solubility - Oil soluble.
Natural / synthetic status - Natural.
Contraindications - Sal butter is generally safe for most skin types. Those with allergies should heed caution. Always do a patch test when using new ingredients.
