Seaweed Extract
INCI - Fucus Vesiculosus Extract / Ascophyllum Nodosum Extract - depending on species used.
What is it - Seaweed extract is a natural ingredient derived from various species of marine algae. Rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants, it is used for its moisturising, soothing, and anti-ageing properties. Seaweed extract helps to hydrate the skin, improve elasticity, and protect against environmental stressors, making it a popular addition to skincare products such as serums, moisturisers, and masks.
pH - 4-6.5.
Safety limit - Typically used up to 5%.
Formulas used in - Moisturisers, serums, face masks, cleansers, shampoos, conditioners, anti-ageing creams, eye creams, body lotions, exfoliating scrubs, and sun care products.
Formulation notes - Add during the cool down phase in emulsions. If using the powder form check to see if it is soluble in water, if not you will need a suitable solvent and rheology modifiers to suspend the powder evenly throughout the formula. It is recommended to use a water soluble variant for easier processing.
Odour - Characteristic, fish like.
Form - Liquid or powder.
Heat sensitivity - Up to 40°C.
Solubility - Depends on solvent used to suspend the extract. If a oil solvent has been used then it will be oil soluble. If a hydrophilic solvent such as water, glycerin or propylene glycol has been used it will be water soluble. If using seaweed powder check solubility with individual supplier.
Natural / synthetic status - Natural usually however check additives added to extract as these may synthetic.
Contraindications - Seaweed extract is generally considered safe for most skin types. Those with allergies should take caution. Always conduct a patch test when using new ingredients. Ensure you are using a grade of seaweed extract that is suitable for cosmetics - cosmetic grade seaweed needs to be refined so impurities and contaminants are removed.
