Vitamin E - Mixed Tocopherol
INCI - Tocopherol.
What is it - Tocopherol is a form of vitamin E commonly used as an antioxidant agent in cosmetic formulas. It also has skin and hair conditioning benefits and helps strengthen the skin barrier.
pH - Effective over a wide pH range.
Safety limit - Typically used between 0.1-2%.
Formulas used in - Serums, creams, lotions, eye creams, hand creams, foot products, sunscreens, skin peels, hair products.
Formulation notes - You need to use a antioxidant when your formula contains plant oils such as coconut oil or essential oils. Mixed tocopherol provides the best antioxidant protection, look for this on safety data sheets (SDS). 0.1-0.3% is appropriate for a low amounts of plant oils. 0.3-0.5% is appropriate as a mid range and 0.5-1% is appropriate for higher inputs of plant oils. 2% is used for hot pour formulas such as balms. 1% is the most common input for tocopherol in formulas. When using tocopherol more doesn't mean better, in fact too much tocopherol can have the opposite effect and accelerate oxidation in your formula. Add during the cool down phase in emulsions.
Odour - Characteristic odour.
Form - Viscous liquid oil.
Heat sensitivity - Up to 40°C.
Solubility - Oil soluble.
Natural / synthetic status - Natural Tocopherol INCI - D-alpha tocopherol. Synthetic Tocopherol (DL-alpha tocopherol). Please check individual safety data sheets and INCIs to determine if you are using a natural or synthetic form.
Contraindications - No known contraindications, considered safe for most skin types.
